Reframing South Africa

Reframing South Africa: Quilts and Photographs

May 13, 2019 – September 27, 2019, RCAH LookOut Art Gallery, MSU
Curated by Marsha MacDowell and Jessica Achberger Martin. Installation by Steve Baibak.

This exhibition draws together objects from two campus collections: quilts from the unique collection of African quilts at the MSU Museum and photographs, recently acquired by the MSU Libraries, taken by American photojournalist Leonard Freed (1929-2006) in the lead-up to South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. Together, these objects reframe ideas about art and the end of apartheid in South Africa.
